Questions and answers
Why is there no account?
Your identity is created on your device and protected by a recovery phrase: 12 words Wiskit shows you when you start. Nobody can sign in as you, and there's no password for us to lose.
How do I share with my partner or family?
On one device open Contacts and show your QR code; scan it from the other (or send your contact link). Then share a tracker from its card. Everyone logs on their own device and sees the same history.
What happens if I lose my phone or computer?
On the new device, choose "I'm restoring from a backup", type your recovery phrase and pick your backup file. Wiskit saves an encrypted backup every day it's open (on Windows into a folder you choose; on iPhone in the Files app, which your iPhone's iCloud Backup includes if it's on), and shows when the last one was made.
You need both the phrase and a backup file. Without them we can't recover anything: we never have a copy. The phrase alone doesn't bring trackers back yet; trackers someone shares with you can be shared again.
What can the developer see?
Nothing you write. Specifically:
- When your devices aren't online together, encrypted messages wait in a mailbox server we run. It can't read them; it sees queue ids, message sizes, timing and IP addresses, and deletes each message once delivered (undelivered ones expire after 30 days).
- Relay servers help devices connect across networks. They see device addresses and traffic volume, not content.
- A public discovery service maps device ids to addresses.
The privacy policy has the details.
Does it work offline?
Yes. Logging and browsing never need the internet. Devices on the same Wi-Fi sync with each other directly.
Android?
Not yet. iPhone, iPad and Windows today.
What's free
Wiskit is free to use and free to share with your family. These stay free for as long as Wiskit exists:
- Unlimited trackers and entries, and your full history
- Sharing with your family's devices, and syncing between them
- Photos kept on your own devices
- Automatic encrypted backup to a place you choose
Why we can promise this. Wiskit syncs directly between your family's devices. Your entries don't live on our servers, so sharing them costs us almost nothing to run.
What may cost money later. Someday there may be an optional plan for the things that do cost money: an encrypted copy of your family's record, plus full-size photos and videos, kept off-site. Nothing on the list above will move behind it.
If Wiskit ever winds down
We built Wiskit so your family's record doesn't depend on us. If we ever stop working on it:
- You'll get at least 90 days' notice in the app.
- The app keeps working between your family's devices.
- Backups stay yours and keep restoring.
